Steena here. Yesterday I went to an "interview" for background work, (being and extra on TV and movies). I thought that I would go in meet with someone and that would be it. It was pretty much like that, except I had to read a monologue to show that I have some sort of "acting" ability, or at least that if I needed to I could speak on camera.
It was hilarious. It was right out of the movies, where people are lined up waiting to be seen. You wait there for 40 minutes and they see you for less than 5. I can see why people do real auditions often, of course to get work, but it is a gamble and a rush going in and hoping to be chosen for the part.
I was not auditioning for a specific part, rather in general to be qualified for background work (I know I already said that). When I got the monologue I studied the hell out of it. Reading it over and over, knowing that I didn't have to memorize it, but trying to anyway (I didn't). I tried to put myself in the shoes of the "character" and channel all of my energy into those 7 or 8 lines of dialogue. I was recalling all of my acting lessons from the one class I took in college.
When I got into the office, the woman put me right at ease by complementing the top I was wearing. I gave her a copy of my resume and she liked what she saw. I mentioned to her that I had done extra work on B&B and that I was really interested in production. I read for her, I was not nervous at all, surprisingly. I was trying to make eye contact with her the whole time, because I felt like the character would have been looking at her "boyfriend" during their argument (that's what the scene was). She was looking down most of the time, which made eye contact somewhat difficult.
She told me that I did a nice job, handed me a card and told me to call the person on the card at 9:15am the next morning. I did that this morning, calling at exactly 9:15 on the dot. The guy on the phone answered right away, I told him who I was and he seemed to know right away (I'm sure he had my resume in front of him). He told me that the woman who saw me saw about 125 people yesterday and I was 1 of 18 people to get his number. I have been laughing about all of this since yesterday, who knew! I now have to get headshots done and fix my resume to go with the headshots. So, I am doing that this week and will have those to the agency by Tuesday. Hopefully you will be seeing me on your favorite shows one of these days!!!
That's so exciting! I'm so happy for you! I can't wait til I can say "Yeah, I was her #1 fan BEFORE she was famous." :)
